“BeyondSnow on Tour” is the project’s traveling roadshow, showcasing activities organized by partners in pilot areas and nearby cities. Its goal is to raise awareness among local communities about climate change and to share with stakeholders an assessment of its potential environmental, social, and economic impacts.
The “BeyondSnow on Tour” events highlighted the importance of individual, institutional, and corporate responsibility in preventing the most severe climate scenarios through ongoing mitigation and adaptation efforts. They also demonstrated how climate change can generate new opportunities for those living and working in low- and mid-mountain regions, especially when supported by forward-looking choices in local governance and policy that shape the future of these territories and their environment.
The BeyondSnow roadshow presented a series of development trajectories that respond to ongoing changes, exploring alternative and sustainable paths to enhance the attractiveness of mountain areas and diversify activities beyond traditional downhill winter sports.
Over the entire project period, 67 dedicated events of various types were carried out across the Alpine arc by the individual partners, and many initiatives were also organized in Italy by the regional branches of Legambiente in mountain areas. Among these:
2023: in Piedmont, “Puliamo il Mondo meets BeyondSnow”; in Lombardy, a walk to Piani d’Erna with a theatrical performance; in Veneto, presentation of the book “Inverno liquido” (Liquid Winter); in Friuli Venezia Giulia, conference on the Carovana delle Alpi (Caravan of the Alps).
2024: in Piedmont, clean-up activities with schools in the Province of Cuneo; in Lombardy, walks at Piani d’Erna with presentation of the Neve diversa (Different Snow) dossier and vulnerability map and presentation of the Carovana dei Ghiacciai (Glacier Caravan); in Veneto, historical and naturalistic excursion in Valle Imperina and presentation of the Carovana delle Alpi (Alps Caravan) and Carovana dei Ghiacciai (Glacier Caravan); in Friuli Venezia Giulia, conference on Communities in Transition and La memoria della neve (The Memory of Snow) in Gemona.
2025: in Piedmont, Green Flag Summit in Orta San Giulio; in Lombardy, walk to discover the Montecampione ski lifts, conference entitled Chi ha paura del lupo? (Who’s afraid of the wolf?) on the theme of large carnivores in the Alps and presentation of the Nevediversa dossier and the Piani Action Plan.
1) Literature reading and panel discussion in Innsbruck, AT – 15/12/2023
“The last snow” was the theme of a ReadingMountainsFestival event in Innsbruck.
Author Arno Camenisch presented his book about what happens in a small Swiss village when there is no snow at the lift station in winter. A panel discussion following the reading has explored current findings on the topic and ideas for solutions in relation to the project BeyondSnow.
2) Workshop in Nova Gorica, SL – 25/09/2024
The workshop explored the decreasing snow cover in the Alps due to climate change and its effect on the local level. Renowned glaciologist Georg Kaser introduced the phenomenon of glacier melt and its impacts. Furthermore, the participants of the session dived into the challenges of local communities: Should they develop infrastructure to improve artificial snowmaking? Is development in higher altitudes the way to go? Or do we master a transition away from snow dependency?
During a roleplay the participants explored different viewpoints on this complex and challenging issue, shedding light on its socio-economic and ecological impacts.
3) Guided Tour Nature Park in Balderschwang AT – march/september 2025
Our winters are changing – but what does this mean for nature? As part of the BeyondSnow project, AidA joined forces with the Nature Park Nagelfluhkette to explore this question.
On a hike with a nature park ranger, the participants learnt about the fascinating adaptation strategies that flora and fauna use to prepare for changing environmental conditions. Some species develop adaptation strategies more quickly, some more slowly. Unfortunately, the slower ones are often the losers in times of climate change.
1) Focus Group “Tourism and sustainable mobility”, Turin, IT – 12.05.2024
A discussion group was held in Turin on the relationship between tourism and sustainable mobility, providing an opportunity for experts in the field to exchange ideas. Different experiences and points of view were shared on accessibility to mountain areas, intermodality as an essential strategy for transport sustainability, and the importance of economic analysis. The specific topics addressed were: the contrast between gentle use and free use of mountain roads, the regulation of vehicular traffic and parking at high altitudes, and the supply and demand of intermodal services for tourists. The initiative was promoted by Legambiente in collaboration with the Metropolitan City of Turin.
2) Meeting: “The promotion of second homes: an opportunity for tourism development in the valleys”, Lanzo Torinese, IT – 28.10.2024
The presence of numerous underutilized second homes in the face of significant demand for rental accommodation is a limiting factor for the development of the pilot area of Ala di Stura and Balme. To increase tourist numbers, it is strategic to stimulate the marketing of properties, promoting the efficiency of the building stock and the development of management services. The meeting on October 28, 2024, in Lanzo Torinese was aimed at local administrators to present an interesting experience developed in the Eastern Alps aimed at creating a qualified accommodation offer and reviving tourism. The idea is to create a circuit that promotes hospitality, sustainable tourism, and the reactivation of the community fabric, involving property owners, local businesses and artisans, associations, and local organizations.
3) Opening of the photo exhibition “The Future of the Alps in the Face of Climate Change”, Balme and Ala di Stura, IT – 04.08.2025
Our winters are changing – but what does this mean for nature? As part of the BeyondSnow project, AidA joined forces with the Nature Park Nagelfluhkette to explore this question.

3) “BeyondSnow on Tour” activity, SLO – 12.3.2025
Together with Turizem Bohinj, we organized and carried out the “BeyondSnow on Tour” activity on March 12th, 2025, during an informative training session for local tourist guides. The purpose of the session was to provide the guides with a deeper understanding of the BeyondSnow project and its alignment with sustainable tourism practices. In addition to introducing the project’s overall objectives, we specifically focused on three key pillars of the Strategy for Adapting Bohinj Tourism to Climate Change. These included:
Objective 1: “GREEN WINTERS” – Development of offerings for green and rainy winters, autumn, and spring, focusing on sustainable innovations and product diversification to extend the tourism season beyond the traditional summer months.
Objective 2: “RELIEVE SUMMER PRESSURE” – Strategies for more efficient management of visits and traffic, particularly during the high summer season, while ensuring that local infrastructure and the environment can accommodate the increased demand in a way that is in harmony with the region’s natural carrying capacity.
Objective 3: “COMPETENCY CENTER” – Efforts to strengthen the local workforce by developing skills and raising awareness among service providers about the importance of sustainability and adaptation to climate change in their operations.
Through these topics, we aimed to empower local tourist guides with the necessary tools and knowledge to promote Bohinj and its surrounding areas as a sustainable, year-round destination. By equipping them with information on both climate change adaptation and sustainable practices, we are fostering a more responsible and resilient tourism industry in the region.

On 14 October, the Swiss Association for Mountain Regions SAB is organising the final conference of the Interreg Alpine Space project ‘BeyondSnow’ in Bern with the title ‘Rethinking winter tourism – are we already in après-ski?’
Climate change is causing problems for winter tourism. The snow line is rising, snow days are becoming fewer and winters are becoming milder. What strategies should tourism regions affected by a lack of snow adopt and how can a transformation to a sustainable destination be achieved that involves the population, further improves the quality of life and secures jobs?
At this conference, we would like to compare the results of the Interreg Alpine Space project ‘BeyondSnow’ with other initiatives, discuss them with representatives of authorities, regions and destinations and identify prospects for winter tourism in the Alps.
1) General Assembly of Alpine Pearls in Primiero San Martino di Castrozza, IT – 14/10/2023
